TV Snowflakes: Sports Unfiltered

Posted on December 13th, 2010 by Mary Beth Ellis

Each is unique, and never to be repeated. We review obscure gems of TV shows that aired for one season (at most) before getting canceled.

We’ve been focusing on traditional dramas and comedies here on The Side Dish, but no television venture is better snowflake bait than a talk show… a talk show focused on a personality who hasn’t come up through the ranks as a talk show host.  A talk show host who hasn’t come up through the ranks as a talk show host, but then was part of one of the biggest network show re-tooling flops in history.

 TV Snowflakes: Sports Unfiltered

Sports Unfiltered:  Around just long enough for a laugh Via

Remember Dennis Miller’s Sports Unfiltered?  Yeah, I’d join in with the “me neither,” but I did see an episode or two.  I think Pete Rose was involved at one point.  Also, words.  Many, many, many… many words.

Sports Unfiltered popped up on Dish Network’s Versus (DISH 151) in the wake of Miller’s amazingly ill- fated turn on and lasted, like, a minute.  Nobody saw this coming.  Okay, so maybe Dennis Miller saw it coming; on the episode I managed to catch, he was suggesting that viewers tell their family and friends about the show.  On Versus!  Tune in!

Why didn’t this work?  The English major in me enjoys Miller.  For up to several minutes at a time.  An hour?  Not so much.  For Sports Unfiltered, in addition to a monologue, a rant, a Vegas bookie betting segment, and a question-  and- answer- segment.  Oh, and interviews.  (I’m thinking this  is where Pete Rose might have come in.  There, or the betting segment.)

It didn’t last for long, but more words were likely spilled on Sports Unfiltered than on most multi-year series.  May God rest it.
