What to Watch This St. Patrick's Day

Posted on March 1st, 2011 by Katie Hoos

If hitting the pubs isn’t your cup of Irish breakfast tea, there will be a pot of gold waiting for you on TV. Here are some suggestions for your St. Paddy’s Day programming.

The New York St. Patrick’s Day Parade- New York’s St. Patrick’s Day parade is the largest in the world, typically hosting 150,000 marchers each year since 1762. Groups from all sorts of organizations like firefighters, colleges, and Irish county associations march along 5th Avenue to celebrate the Feast of St. Patrick, sporting shamrocks, green garb, and Irish pride flags along the way. Instead of getting trampled by a crowd of drunken New Yorkers, relax on your couch and get into the St. Paddy’s Day spirit. Tune into NBC New York (local Dish Network Channel 241) for parade coverage from 11am-3pm.

American Idol- Now that the hilarious audition episodes are over with (and my interest) the serious competition is underway. You can watch the Top 12 performers results show to see which of your favorite Idols gets the boot. Idol airs 8-10pm on Fox (local Dish Network Channel 247). Let’s hope the contestants sing traditional Irish music in support of St. Paddy’s.

Jersey Shore- What better way to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day than watching drunken fools running around the beach? See what kind of shenanigans these Shore go-ers get into on MTV (Dish Network Channel 160) at 10pm. Remember: everybody is Irish on St. Patrick’s Day, even Snooki Polizzi.

Watch these re-runs- The Office and The Simpsons both had special St. Patrick’s Day episodes paying homage to all things Irish while bringing on the laughs. Dwight attempts an Irish brogue, Andy models a kilt, and Bart gets drunk enough to re-instate Prohibition in Springfield: all in all creating a decent tribute to St. Paddy’s Day. If you have access to these comedy gems, break them out for a bit of holiday cheer.

Hopefully these shows will tickle your Irish fancy (if not, there’s always Leprechaun, a horrendously great horror movie played on re-run) this St. Patrick’s Day. Happy holiday, everyone. Erin Go Bragh!
